Barrington, Illinois is geographically located in both Cook County and Lake County, so the recent passage of mandatory sick leave and a much higher minimum wage in Cook County posed a sticky dilemma for many of the businesses in Barrington.  The town responded quickly to resolve the issues however by passing an ordinance this week that allows any business within the town boundaries to comply with the state and federal minimum wage laws and ignore Cook County’s $10 minimum wage (on the way to $13) as well as its requirement to give workers sick leave.  Town Manager Jeff Lawler explained that had the town not acted, some of the businesses would have had higher costs than their competitors elsewhere in town.  Under Illinois law, local laws supercede those enacted by county governments.
