Today is April 15, tax day.  This year though, taxpayers have an extra three days because of the April 16 Emancipation Day holiday.  Emancipation Day is celebrated to mark the anniversary of Abraham Lincoln signing the District of Columbia Emancipation Act, by which some 3,000 slaves were freed in the nation’s capital.  In that the holiday falls on a Saturday, it is formally being observed in Washington, DC today.  Enjoy the holiday, but file your taxes by Monday — unless you file in Massachusetts or Maine where the Patriots Day holiday is celebrated on Monday, pushing their tax day off to Tuesday, April 19!  For those who wish to purchase small group health insurance coverage effective May 1, today is the deadline to purchase and make the initial payment on the SHOP Exchange Marketplace.
