Two days ago, the New York City ban on Styrofoam cups and food containers was struck down by a Manhattan Supreme Court justice.   Judge Margaret Chan rejected the contention of NYC Sanitation Commissioner Kathryn Garcia that expanded polystyrene was not recyclable in the face of evidence to the contrary presented by plaintiffs Dart Container Corp and the Restaurant Action Alliance NYC., a coalition of minority residents and owners of NYC restaurants.  The ban was originally proposed by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, but not enacted under his administration.  Current Mayor Bill de Blasio implemented the ban in January and it became effective on July 1 of this year.  In the wake of the court’s ruling, the city announced that they were reviewing the ruling with an eye toward what its options are.  There will likely be much more news on this in the coming weeks.
