In the “frosting on the cake” category, Washington DC Councilman David Grosso this week filed legislation that would mandate up to 16 weeks of paid family leave for all employees in the District of Columbia! The proposal would require that all non-federal employers pay into a city-managed fund (what could go wrong with that?) that would then pay employees when they experienced a “qualifying life event”. The bill proposes a sliding scale to determine how much each employer in the nation’s capital would be required to pay annually – and, the proposal covers every employer in DC, whether they currently offer paid sick/family leave or not! As we saw with minimum wage proposals, prepare for elected officials elsewhere to try to “one-up” the DC proposal.
