With the rapid proliferation of class action lawsuits against small business men and women around the country, it becomes that much more imperative for the franchise owner community to be totally prepared to respond quickly and correctly upon first learning of a possible lawsuit being filed – the correct response? We’re pleased to have Attorney Diane Saunders, a Shareholder in the Boston office of Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart, P.C. joining DDIFO General Counsel Carl Lisa, Sr., partner in the Providence firm of Lisa Sousa, LTD to present this important session on protecting yourself from costly litigation.
Ms. Saunders is the Co-Chair of the firm’s Retail Practice Group, a member of the Class Action Practice Group’s Steering Committee, and a member of the Pay Equity Practice Group. She has been helping employers solve their employment issues and disputes (including sexual harassment, pay equity, wage & hour, among others) for over 20 years. Ms. Saunders has significant expertise in defending class and collective action suits alleging violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act, the Equal Pay Act, and Massachusetts wage and hour laws, including the Massachusetts Tips Law and the Massachusetts Independent Contractor Law.
Carl B. Lisa has served as General Counsel of DDIFO for many years. Admitted to the Rhode Island Bar in 1964 and the U.S. District Court Bar for the District of Rhode Island in 1965, he was also a Smithfield Probate Judge from 1973 – 1975 and again from 1977 – 1981. A recipient of many awards and recognition throughout his career, including Outstanding Franchise Lawyer from the Franchise Times and the Certificate of Distinction from the Rhode Island Bar Association, he was inducted into the URI Athletic Hall of Fame in 1977 and was a 2014 inductee into the DDIFO Hall of Fame.
