The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed suit this week in the US District Court in Columbia, Missouri challenging a new statute that took effect on Wednesday. An omnibus agriculture bill signed earlier this summer by former Governor Eric Greitens contained a provision prohibiting companies from calling a product “meat” unless it is derived from harvested production livestock or poultry”. The action was filed on behalf of Turtle Island Foods, which markets plant-based products under the trademark “Tofursky” and was joined by The Good Food Institute, a non-profit advocate of plant-based alternatives based in Washington, DC among others. The litigation challenges the “meat law” on freedom of speech grounds.
