Last week, we reported on the US Senate confirmation hearing for Boston Mayor – Secretary of Labor nominee – Marty Walsh. Well, we now know who has been nominated to serve as his second-in-command, California Labor Secretary Julie Su. She currently heads up the California Department of Labor and Workforce Development and was on the short list for consideration as Labor Secretary until Biden tapped Walsh. Su is a favorite of California union leaders having championed many of organized labor’s priorities in the Golden State. She was appointed by former Governor Jerry Brown to the post of California Labor Commissioner in 2011 and served in that capacity for eight years before becoming Labor Secretary in 2019. Previously, she was a labor and employment attorney with a non-profit organization focused on workplace enforcement and litigation. Her nomination is subject to US Senate confirmation as well and she may run into difficulties in the process, currently being in charge of the scandal-plagued California unemployment benefits system which has recently seen evidence of wide-spread fraud.
