So, just yesterday it was reported that earlier this week the New Jersey Senate approved legislation authorizing the payment of unemployment benefits to striking workers. Assembly Speaker Vinnie Prieto, who plans a vote on the issue soon, opined that strikers should not have to go weeks without getting compensation! Wait, what?? Then, it follows that employees can strike against their employer, but still be compensated by the state’s unemployment fund until the strike is settled or the work stoppage (partially funded by the state unemployment fund) puts the company out of business? And that’s good for the workers? Driving the point home, it was separately reported yesterday that Trump Taj Mahal, an Atlantic City casino whose workers have been on strike since July 1, will go out of business this fall and close permanently sometime in October – costing 3,000 striking workers their jobs! But, they’ll be eligible for unemployment!!!
