Starbucks wins California Tip-pooling Case Appeal

An appeals court in California sided with Starbucks Corp. and on Tuesday reversed a lower-court ruling that the Seattle coffee giant’s tip-sharing policies violated California labor law. The court agreed with Starbucks that shift supervisors may share in customers’ tips.

NASAA Supports Arbitration Fairness Act

The North American Securities Administrators Association, NASAA, announced last week that it fully supports the Arbitration Fairness Act, introduced as S. 931 by Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) and H.R. 1020 by Representative Hank Johnson (D-GA), which makes forced arbitration unenforceable.

Starbucks Is Now the Official MSNBC ‘Morning Joe’

Starbucks is becoming a naming sponsor of “Morning Joe,” in what is the closest integration between an advertiser and a national news program in recent memory. Harkening back to the “Camel News Caravan,” an NBC news roundup sponsored by a cigarette manufacturer in the 1950s, graphics and voice-overs will tell viewers that “Morning Joe” is “brewed by Starbucks.”

McDonald’s Takes On Starbucks in Europe

Jenny Wiggins in London for Financial Times writes that McDonald’s is aiming to overtake Starbucks as Europe’s biggest coffee chain, with plans to open several hundred McCafé stores selling pastries and cappuccinos this year.
