They didn’t quite say the customer’s always right, but in some ways, one can infer that message from the latest COVID guidance issued by the US Center for Disease Control (CDC). Earlier this week, the CDC released a new guidance urging employees not to try to force customers to follow COVID-19 prevention guidelines! In fact, the agency charged with controlling infectious diseases in America, is encouraging businesses – retail businesses, in particular – to adopt workplace safety policies (masks, social distancing, customer limits), but not to have workers forcing customers to abide by CDC policies. To do so, the agency fears, will potentially subject the employee to verbal threats, confrontations and even possible violence and physical assaults – including slapping and choking!
