Starbucks announced earlier this week that it is making enhancements to its loyalty program in order to attract new members to their program and engage them more quickly. Effective April 16, Starbucks Rewards members will be able to redeem rewards once they’ve accumulated 25 points vs. the current threshold of 125 points. The company claims the program grew over 14% in the last year and now counts over 16 million members. And, media reports declared that one of the big takeaways from the Starbucks annual meeting Wednesday was the development and marketing of a new environment-friendly lid that effectively eliminates the need for straws. Burger King last week entered the coffee market in a big way with the introduction of a $5/month coffee subscription. The subscription, available only through the Burger King app, entitles the BK Café subscriber to a free small coffee every day of the month. At the same time, the company announced it dropped the price of its small coffee (which was ranging from $1 to $1.29 per cup) to $0.50 per cup effective this past Monday.
