It was reported this week that Starbucks is acquiring an ownership stake in Italian bakery Princi, with 4 locations in Italy and one in central London.  The company also made headlines this week when it announced that it was increasing wages across the board by 5% up to the manager level and adding further enhancements to the company’s stock award program for employees.  In a letter sent to all employees on Monday, CEO Howard Schultz addressed a number of issues and also announced that he was relaxing the company dress code.  In unrelated news (?), Starbucks increased its prices Tuesday on a broad array of beverages to address “increased costs”.   Just as a word of caution, we would note that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) has filed suit against a McDonalds franchise owner in Arkansas after the franchisee terminated an employee when it became known to them that the worker was HIV positive, a clear violation of federal law.  Employees were also allegedly required to disclose prescription medication usage. The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits employers from discriminating against employees because of medical conditions.   In another illustration of the importance of ensuring that all of your computers are PCI compliant, the recent hack of the Wendys chain, which the company began investigating in January, has now been confirmed to have hit 1,025 of their stores spread across all 50 states!
