We noted last week that Starbucks is developing its latest Reserve Roastery in the former flagship Crate & Barrel store on Northern Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago. Scheduled to open in 2019, the Roastery will total 43,000 square feet on the Magnificent Mile.  It was also reported just yesterday, that Starbucks is planning to expand its current loyalty rewards program to also include purchases of their products at grocery stores around the country. Although a much smaller company, it was recently announced that British coffee chain Caffe Nero now has seven unique locations open within the City of Boston. Lastly, we took note that Great Harvest Bread Company has filed a formal objection to the recent acquisition of Panera Bread by JAB Holdings. The Montana-based company serves Peet’s Coffee products (also owned by JAB) and alleges that the acquisition will give Panera an unfair advantage. Further, the company has a separate lawsuit pending against Panera over allegations of trademark infringement from over a year ago.
