The admonition of Benjamin Franklin came to mind as the Connecticut General Assembly’s Labor and Public Employees Committee this week gave initial approval to HB 6791, an act that will require employers with 500 or more employees to pay a fine of $1/hour for each employee that is not paid at least $15/hour.  On a 6-4 vote, the bill, which applies to individual franchisees because they are part of the larger franchisor, but not to union companies until expiration of any existing collective bargaining agreement, was sent to the House floor for its 2nd reading.  If Connecticut franchise owners were to join together, might there be strength in numbers? As Franklin advised those signing the Declaration of Independence – and it seems fitting to remember in this context: “We must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.”
