Maybe they’re enjoying the notoriety of adopting more and more progressive laws (paid sick leave law 3 weeks ago and the above-referenced minimum wage), but the Cook County Board is apparently looking for more. Board President Toni Preckwinkle now wants the county to adopt a tax of $.01 per ounce on soda and other sugary drinks, a new tax that is projected to raise $74 million in the six months after its imposition in July.  The money would be used to shrink a $174.3 million deficit in her 2017 budget.  Preckwinkle pushed through $130 million in pay raises last year, an amount equal to 75% of the budget deficit!
