The Chicago suburbs followed the path of the Windy City this week with the formal approval of mandatory paid sick leave for private employees by the Cook County Board of Commissioners.  Almost identical to the Chicago version of paid sick leave passed back in June, the Cook County law provides that all employees who work a minimum of 80 hours within any 4 month period be entitled to earn one hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked and allows those employees to carry over a minimum of 40 hours of unused sick leave from one year to the next.  The county law, like the Chicago version will take effect next July and applies to all employers regardless of the size of the business.  The Board passed the bill into law on a vote of 11 – 4 and one “profile in courage” voting present!
