Back at the local level, a handful of communities within Cook County in Illinois have reversed earlier decisions to opt out of the Cook County paid sick leave mandate and are now opting in. Northbrook became the latest when it reconsidered and opted in to mandate that its employers provide workers up to 40 hours of paid sick leave annually. The Northbrook decision follows a similar reversal earlier by Western Springs and the decision by the Village of Wilmette to put the question to voters. County-wide, voters overwhelmingly supported advisory questions relating increasing the minimum wage to $13/hour and mandating paid sick leave across the county by pluralities of 84.5% and 89.4% respectively. Illinois business owners would be well-advised to prepare for these issues resurfacing this year.
