As we move closer to the transition – Congressional as well as Presidential – in Washington DC, long-stalled negotiations on a new COVID-19 stimulus package gained new life. Democratic leaders quickly seemed to rally being $908 billion bipartisan proposal with an eye on winning sufficient support in the republican-led Senate. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY) issued a joint statement earlier this week calling for the proposal to serve as a basis for negotiations – in other words, a starting point. As there is no legislative language yet per se, we’re not certain what might end up in a final piece of legislation, but the framework is believed to include as much as $300 billion in new funds for small businesses, including another round of PPP funding as well as a $300-per-week premium in unemployment benefits. Further, there is funding for schools, transportation, rental assistance as well as state and local government funding. So, as Congress nears the end of session, DDIFO joins the Coalition of Franchisee Associations (CFA) to urge you to contact Congress and urge them to pass a COVID relief bill that provides needed assistance now to franchisees and other small businesses.
