Although he has still yet to sign the legislation or officially indicate that he will sign it, newly re-nominated democrat New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has made clear that he does intend to expand the state paid sick leave law to allow for bereavement leave of up to 12 weeks. The legislature passed the bereavement expansion months ago and it has been under consideration by the Governor’s office since. Cuomo, who recently defeated actress Cynthia Nixon for the democratic nomination, said in their August debate that he would support the addition of bereavement leave for private employees, but wanted to be sure the two requirements (paid sick leave and bereavement leave) “work together”.
