Just a few days after New York City restaurants were allowed to begin a (very) limited reopening process (25% indoor capacity), New York Mayor de Blasio wanted to order the reclosing of many (along with other “non-essential” businesses) across nine NYC zip codes in response to a spike in COVID-19 cases. In fact, the Mayor had a plan on exactly who he wanted to close and how! But, Governor Andrew Cuomo – himself no fan of the Mayor – trumped the Mayor on Tuesday and ordered the schools closed a day earlier than de Blasio planned. Ultimately, Cuomo ordered strict enforcement to begin across several communities which prompted immediate backlash and protests from some of the religious communities affected. There’ll be more to see over the next few weeks as the Governor manages the enforcement of the closings in the Mayor’s jurisdiction.
