Although his final decision should not have been in doubt, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo used the occasion of the USA Women’s World Cup Champions ticker tape parade to sign legislation mandating equal pay for substantially similar work and prohibiting pay differences based on an individual’s age, race, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, domestic violence victim status, military status, and disability. In addition, he signed a separate bill into law that prohibits a prospective employer from inquiring into an applicant’s salary history before a formal offer of employment is extended to the applicant or relying on past salary history to determine a prospective level of compensation.
