Council Chairman Phil Mendelson announced a hearing on multiple paid leave bills which provide different funding mechanisms for the family leave bill that passed in December of 2016. The public hearing is scheduled for 10:30 AM on Tuesday, October 10. 10 at 10:30 am. The current law, which was passed by the DC Council in December, increases employer-paid payroll taxes by .62 percent in order to fund paid leave for individuals employed in DC. Unchanged, the bill imposes $250 million in new taxes on local businesses in the District to fund two months of paid time off for workers to care for newborns, adopted children and ailing relatives. It applies to both full as well as part-time workers and the tax is slated to begin on July 1, 2019 with workers able to access the benefit beginning in 2020.
