Or had I been so inclined, I could have headlined this story “Another one bites the dust”. Believe it or not, we now have 5 democratic presidential campaigns where the staff belongs to a union. The campaign staff of New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, recently polling in the middle of the democratic presidential pack, has formally voted by card check to affiliate with the Teamsters Union Local 238. The Booker campaign joins four other presidential campaigns as unionized operations. Previously, the staffs of the Representative Earl Swalwell (also Teamsters Local 238, though Swalwell has since dropped out of the race), Bernie Sanders (United Food and Commercial Workers Local 400), Julián Castro (Campaign Workers Guild) and Elizabeth Warren campaigns (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 2320) all formally voted to affiliate with specific unions. A few months ago, former Vice President Joe Biden indicated he would welcome union representation for his staff if they wanted to affiliate with a union, although they have yet to do so. To date, only the Sanders campaign has been formally accused of unfair labor practices by their staff union, but the campaign is still young!
