The Kansas City Business Journal reports that Dunkin’ Donuts is coming back to the metro with a new Overland Park location and more to follow. Franchisee Verona Key LLC plans to open its first Kansas City-area Dunkin’ Donuts restaurant Thursday in Overland Park.

The new Dunkin’ Donuts at 7722 W. 151st St. will have 45 to 55 mostly full-time employees, Jennifer Benjamin, co-owner and president of Verona Key, said Tuesday. Verona Key plans to open 15 area Dunkin’ Donuts restaurants in the next eight to 10 years, Benjamin said. The company is in negotiations for a second location, she said.

Benjamin wouldn’t disclose the costs of becoming a Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee or opening the first restaurant.

Reggie Wright, director of franchising for Dunkin’ Donuts, said franchisees pay a one-time fee of $40,000 a restaurant, an ongoing franchise fee of 5.9 percent of weekly gross sales and 5 percent of weekly gross sales for advertising.

“It’s been a tremendous learning process,” Benjamin said of preparing to open the first restaurant. “We’ve had a lot of support from the (Dunkin’ Donuts) brand team. We have a big contingency of brand employees in Kansas City who’ve been here for several weeks to help with training and site identification.”

Former Kansas City Royal and Baseball Hall of Famer George Brett will help launch an on-site food drive for Harvesters — The Community Food Network at the new Dunkin’ Donuts on Thursday.
