The Labor Department reported earlier this week that employers added 261,000 jobs in October while the unemployment rate increased to 3.7% for the month. At the same time, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the total number of unemployed persons rose by 360,000 to 6.1 million! And yesterday the BLS released inflation numbers for October showing the Consumer Price Index had increased 0.4 percent for the month prior to seasonal adjustment, yielding an annual inflation rate of 7.7% over the past 12 months. Also, this week, corporate executives across a number of different industries began sounding early warnings about potential slowdowns in hiring plans, hiring freezes and even possible layoffs amid concerns of a looming recession.
