In the 2015 federal budget submitted by President Obama, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had requested $4.9 Billion in spending and a 70 percent increase in staff.  The agency claims that the funds and additional personnel are necessary for it to meet its obligation under the mandates of the Food Safety and Modernization Act (FSMA).  The FSMA was signed into law back in 2011and ostensibly shifted the FDA focus more from food contamination response to prevention.  With Republicans controlling both branches, any final budget approved will more closely match Congressional priorities.
