We will report regularly on the fate of the Protect Florida Small Business Act, filed last week by Florida state senator Jack Latvala and a host of other sponsors.  The bill (SB 750 – An Act Relating Franchises) seeks to restore some sense of balance to the franchisee-franchisor relationship.  Within an hour of the bill being filed on February 7, the opposition spin machines were running at full capacity to misrepresent the proposal and the positive effects it will have on franchising in Florida. Notwithstanding, SB 750 is now pending in the Florida state senate and will likely be given a public hearing within the next few weeks. The Florida legislative session is exceedingly short – beginning on March 7 and concluding by May 5 – so we will look to make an impact quickly and effectively with legislators. Watch for more info on this issue.
