When Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) became aware of the lopsided playing field with which franchisees have had to contend, she set about seeking solutions. She subsequently produced an 87-page report on franchising, filed legislation to mandate more transparency and pushed for more diligent enforcement by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Well, we are now starting to see results, as her office advised us yesterday of a new complaint portal for franchisees created by the FTC on its website. On the FTC homepage under “Take Action”, a franchisee would click REPORT FRAUD, then click REPORT NOW, and then check the circle for Jobs, Investment, Money Making Opportunities, Franchise which opens up a button specifically called FRANCHISE, through which a franchisee can provide up to 3,500 characters to lodge a formal complaint with the FTC. The portal is designed to use appropriate terms related to franchise agreements, contracts and experience. A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.
