Senator Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Representative Peter DeFazio (D-OR) have filed legislation again that would require the labeling of food containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs).  The identical bills were filed respectively in the Senate (S.511) and the US House (HR. 913).  The Senate filing had 13 additional co-sponsors (all democratic Senators), while the House bill claimed 22 additional sponsors (21 democrats and 1 republican).  The bills are similar to legislation filed by Boxer and DeFazio during the last session of Congress.  The issue has received attention in a couple of states, with Vermont actually passing a labeling requirement (currently being challenged in the courts) and Connecticut enacting a version that only takes effect if a neighboring state enacts a GMO labeling requirement.
