Last week’s Hurricane Harvey left unimaginable damage and destruction in Texas and parts of Louisiana. Following closely on its heels, the impending arrival of Hurricane Irma in the southeast United States has us all praying for those who have and will be devastated by the fury of Mother Nature. In no way to minimize the horror of these two storms, we did read with interest this important alert from SESCO Management on paying employees when weather causes a business to close. They explain non-exempt employees only get paid when they work, so if a business is closed, workers who didn’t work aren’t entitled to pay. Exempt employees are a different situation and should get the day’s pay unless the business was open and they failed to show for work. How the rules under predictive scheduling will impact employee compensation when the business closes for weather remains to be seen.
