The recent efforts of the Department of Labor to rescind an Obama-era restriction on tip pools were targeted yesterday by House democrats. A roundtable held in DC focused on generating opposition to the DOL proposed rule allowing tip pooling. Democratic members of the Committee on Education and the Workforce among others joined representatives from the Restaurant Opportunities Center United (ROC), the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) and the National Employment Law Project to protest DOL considering allowing back-of-the-house employees to be included in tip pools. The latest proposed tip pool regulation has run into increased opposition in the wake of allegations that the Department withheld some economic analyses on the issue that showed the tip pool rule could be detrimental to employees. That matter is now being investigated by the DOL inspector general.
