US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has already doubled the amount of ongoing worksite cases this fiscal year (October through May 4) compared to all of FY17! ICE enforces the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986, which requires employers to verify the identity and work eligibility of all individuals they hire. Thus far this year, the agency has initiated 3510 worksite investigations compared to only 1716 in all of last year, and conducted 2282 I-9 audits compared to 1360 in all of FY17. ICE advises employers to consider enrolling in IMAGE (Immigration Mutual Agreement between Government and Employers), a cooperative certification program with employers whereby ICE assists businesses to ensure compliance with IRCA. Those enrolled businesses are then ‘certified’ as being IRCA compliant and less susceptible to ICE enforcement activities (fines, penalties, etc.). DDIFO will have an ICE Agent presenting IMAGE program information at the DDIFO National Conference in New Orleans.
