The International Franchise Association (IFA) on Monday filed an amicus brief in conjunction with the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) supporting a lawsuit challenging the NY fast-food minimum wage. The National Restaurant Association (NRA) originally challenged the discriminatory ‘fast-food-only minimum wage increase’ when it was first mandated by the NY Fast Food Wage Board, appointed by Governor Andrew Cuomo. Subsequently, the New York Industrial Board of Appeals upheld the wage mandate back in early December after which, the NRA challenge was filed in the courts. Governor Cuomo, who first recommended the $15 fast food minimum wage even before appointing the wage board, is now recasting the $15 billion cost of the increase as “dollars re-invested in the regional economy”! His Department of Labor claims those costs will be recaptured as a reduction in costs for minimum wage earners on public assistance! And sadly, a large number of people will believe that spin! Unbelievable!
