That famous quote by Oscar Wilde (“Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.”) seems to fit nicely when one reads the most recent SEC filings from Starbucks Corporation. Starbucks yesterday published an SEC note which was company CEO Kevin Johnson’s note to all Starbucks employees. In it, he essentially confesses that Starbucks has become a believer in the “on the go” concept – a concept which Dunkin’ has been working on for a very long time. In that vein, he announced that they would expand their “Starbucks Pickup” kiosk format into more urban locations. The “Starbucks Pickup” site has been in test at Penn Plaza in New York City for the past nine months and the company has been slowly transitioning their store mix from more costly traditional stores to drive thru kiosks where feasible for some time. He also noted that US store sales last week improved to 60-65% of the pre-March 2020 sales base. I wonder if they’ll sell donuts next?
