Earlier this week, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) acknowledged and reaffirmed that taxpayers in certain situations are entitled to penalty relief when they can show reasonable cause and not willful neglect for the failure to pay. The issue, which largely stemmed from the Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC) and the ongoing backlog of tax returns, was tackled by Dunkin’ franchisee and Coalition of Franchisee Associations (CFA) Chairman John Motta working with the office of New Hampshire Senator Maggie Hassan. With prodding from Motta, Senators Hassan and Ron Wyden (D-OR) wrote Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen and IRS Director Charles Rettig to underscore the difficulties that businesses awaiting ERTC. The success of this effort – in particular, the diligence of John Motta – underscores the importance of franchisees knowing their representatives in Washington and being involved enough to effectively explain issues to our elected officials and willing to step up and participate. Thank you, John Motta!
