Kansas City, Missouri became the latest big city in the nation to adopt its own minimum wage when the KC City Council voted 12 – 1 last week to impose a city minimum wage of $8.50 effective August 28.  The issue is certain to be challenged legally however, as existing Missouri law prohibits local communities from establishing their own minimum wage in very clear language: “No municipality . . . shall establish, mandate or otherwise require a minimum wage that exceeds the state minimum wage.”
