Our friends at the Bennett Law Firm in Portland Maine reminded us that a new law banning employers from inquiring about a prospective employee’s salary history took effect this week. The prohibition, which formally took effect on September 18, exists until such time as the employer extends a job offer to the applicant that includes the terms of compensation. As with other salary history prohibitions, should the applicant voluntarily disclose such information, the employer is allowed to inquire as necessary to confirm the accuracy of the information provided. We should have included this information in the Approaching Deadlines entry in last week’s issue of Small Regular No Sugar! and we regret the omission.
