The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that real average hourly earnings for all employees increased 1.7 percent year over year from January 2018 to January 2019. On a month to month basis, real average hourly earnings rose 0.2 percent from December to January, resulting from a 0.1 percent increase in average hourly earnings combined with no change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI). In a bid to lure employees to its shops, especially in the wake of 2 years of bad publicity stemming from antics and comments of former CEO John Schnatter, Papa John’s last week announced that it would be offering its employees full tuition to Purdue University online classes. The new benefit will be available to all employees of the pizza chain who work at least 20 hours and the cost is estimated at $5250 per person per year. Papa John’s joins Starbucks and Walmart as companies paying for employee education.
