Last week saw new unemployment claims set a new record with 3.3 million claims in one week. Well, that record didn’t last long as the Department of Labor (DOL) yesterday reported that new claims for unemployment benefits reached over 6.6 million – more than double last week’s record! To put those numbers in perspective, the previous high was 695,000 recorded back in 1982 and the highest total during the Great Recession of a decade ago was 665,000. A number of businesses joined together in Pennsylvania to file suit against Governor Tom Wolf for ordering the closing of all non-essential businesses across the Keystone State. The plaintiffs allege that Wolf’s order violates the US Constitution’s prohibition on unlawful takings without just compensation as they claim the government-ordered closing effectively put them out of business.
