The CATO Institute this week released a report ranking which states were the most free and least free in the nation. Ironically, New York, the state governed by the aforementioned Andrew Cuomo (he of the America “never was that great” quote) was rated the “least free” of the 50 states in the nation! At the other end of the spectrum, Florida, New Hampshire and Indiana, in that order, were the most free. We also noted that according to The NPD Group ReCount census, the number of US restaurants declined 1% to 660,755 units in the spring. At the same time, US Commerce Department data released this week indicates that restaurant spending increased in July a seasonally-adjusted 1.3 percent. However, the US Census Bureau also reported that year-over-year sales were up a very healthy 9.7 percent.
