Earlier this week, the House Committee on Agriculture approved HR 1599, legislation establishing a uniform standard for the labeling of food and beverage products containing bioengineered ingredients.  The Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, introduced by Representatives Mike Pompeo (R-KA) and G.K. Butterfield (D-NC), is designed to preclude individual states from passing labeling legislation that would inevitably result in a national patchwork of state-mandated labeling requirements.  Although there’s still a long way to go, this is a good start to uniform national labeling.
