It was actually signed into law by Governor Cuomo back in 2016, but within one month, the New York State Family Leave Law will take full effect. Beginning January 1, 2018, the state’s family leave program will provide New York employees with paid leave and job protection for a number of reasons including to care for a loved one with a serious health condition, to bond with a new child or to help relieve family pressures when someone is called to active military service. Under its provisions, most private employees in the Empire State will be eligible for Paid Family Leave benefits and consequently, would be entitled to: paid time off for 8 weeks in 2018, increasing to 12 weeks by 2021; job protection upon returning from Paid Family Leave; and continuation of one’s health insurance while out on Paid Family Leave. There is much more that our New York business owners must know to ensure they are compliant with this new mandate, and toward that end, we found this state online brochure to be quite clarifying and helpful.
