He may be polling at an abysmal 15% favorable, but New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has to be liked by more small business owners after he vetoed a dramatic expansion of the New Jersey paid leave mandate this week. New Jersey law currently provides for 6 weeks of paid family leave at two-thirds of salary capped at $633 per week. The legislature sent AB4927, which would have doubled the paid leave limit to 12 weeks and increased the weekly salary cap to $932! In addition, it would have lowered the threshold of businesses covered from 50 employees to 20 and expanded the categories of those covered as caregivers to include siblings, grandparents, grandchildren and parent-in-law. Governor Christie suggested the legislation be amended to focus on increasing awareness of existing paid leave benefits. The democrat-controlled legislature needs republican votes to override the Governor’s veto.
