As it currently exists, the paid sick leave law in New York City provides that workers may use accrued sick leave if they themselves are sick, or to receive medical care or diagnosis for an injury, illness or condition.  In addition, it may also be taken if the employee is providing care for a family member including a child, parent, grandchild, grandparent, spouse, domestic partner or sibling.  Under a proposal now being crafted by Mayor de Blasio and the city council, the use of accrued sick leave will be expanded to cover domestic violence protections including counselling and court appearances.  Business group within New York City have been supportive of the initiative.
