Speaking of Paid Family and Medical Leave, expect legislation to mandate it as a paid benefit to have a prominent place in the buildup to the 2020 presidential election. As we know, President Trump (as recently as the State of the Union address on February 5) has expressed his support for some kind of federal family and medical leave, while senior advisor and first daughter, Ivanka Trump has been meeting with Senators and members of Congress on the issue for the past several months. In addition, announced democratic presidential candidate and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) has refiled legislation mandating paid family and medical leave nationally. Her bill is co-sponsored by Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Kamala Harris (D-CA) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), all of whom have announced for the democratic nomination for President in 2020! An identical version was filed in the US House by Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), at least one non-candidate on the issue.
