It won’t go away anytime soon, so we should be aware and prepared to fight proposals to mandate additional paid leave for employees. Advocates are not resting as evidenced by the fact that the Austin Texas City Council passed a new paid leave mandate just last week. Under the provisions of the bill, which passed the council on a vote of 9-2, a business employing 15 or more workers would be required to grant its employees 8 paid sick days per year beginning in October, 2018, while a business with between 6 and 15 employees would be required to grant 6 days. Businesses with five or fewer employees in Austin would be required to grant paid sick leave effective October, 2019. On the basis of comments made about the bill by Austin Mayor Steve Adler, it is anticipated that he will sign the bill into law.
