The City of Brotherly Love will be showing some love for the area commuters and more disdain for small business owners now that Mayor Jim Kenney has signed the new Employee Commuter Transit Benefit Program into law. The initiative, passed by the Philadelphia City Council just one month ago requires covered employers (50 or more covered employees) to offer workers either a pre-tax payroll deduction for mass transit and qualified bicycle expenses or an employer paid benefit covering mass transit expenses. The IRS currently allows taxpayers to set aside up to $280 per month for public transit passes. The new mandate goes into effect on December 31, 2022. Speaking of the Mayor, he recently said he was “I’m waiting for something bad to happen all the time, so I’ll be happy when I’m not here, when I’m not mayor and can enjoy some stuff.” You’re not alone in that regard Mayor, we’re sure many small business owners look forward to the day you’re not Mayor also, when they can enjoy some stuff, like their business!
