Late yesterday, the US Senate endorsed a restaurant relief amendment to the budget resolution filed jointly by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday. The budget resolution is the start of the Biden administration’s $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill that includes the federal minimum wage increase to $15 per hour. It was initially filed as a placeholder with the details being filled in by amendments being adopted over the next few days, so as to allow for final passage under budget reconciliation rules in order to end-run an expected republican filibuster. The Restaurant Relief Fund, which was initially proposed at a cost of $120 billion by the Independent Restaurant Coalition, provides a $25 billion appropriation in new targeted grants for eligible restaurants.
