Lisa Jennings of Nation’s Restaurant News reports that Starbucks Corp.’s new food menu rolled out on Tuesday with a new line of baked goods, a new smoothie and a salad designed to appeal to health-conscious customers.

As previously announced, the new items are free of artificial flavors, preservatives, dyes and high-fructose corn syrup, and focus on wholesome ingredients, such as fresh fruit.

A new Blueberry Oat Bar, for example, features two types of organic blueberries. The banana walnut bread is nearly 30 percent “real banana,” officials said.

“Starbucks customers have been telling us that they want better tasting and healthier food options when they visit our stores,” said Sandra Stark, Starbucks vice president, food category. “We answered their call with a delicious new menu of food made with real ingredients and more wholesome options. Whether they are looking for their morning breakfast, nutritious lunch or afternoon treat, we are confident our customers will taste the difference.”

The company did not disclose prices for the new items, and did not return calls for comment by press time.

Other new menu offerings include a 210-calorie Marshmallow Dream Bar, and a Farmer’s Market salad featuring blue cheese, almonds, dried cranberries and apples on romaine lettuce with an all-natural balsamic vinaigrette for 300 calories, with the dressing.

The coffeehouse giant, which operates or licenses 16,862 locations worldwide, also has added to its smoothie offerings with a new Strawberry Banana Vivanno made with strawberry puree, a whole banana, whey protein powder, 2-percent milk and ice. Officials said the new drink offers 15 grams of protein, 7 grams of fiber, 100-percent of the daily recommendation for vitamin C and just 280 calories.
