Starbucks Corporation has joined the chorus of companies increasing their employee benefits program in some manner or other in the face of a historically tight labor market. The Seattle-based company announced that it is expanding its child care coverage for employees and significantly subsidizing the benefit for its 180,000 employees. Under the new plan, employees can access backup childcare and/or adult care for aging parents through Care.com, an online marketplace for finding and managing family care. Employees will be required to pay $1 per hour for at home child or adult care through the backup program or $5 per hour for facility-based care.
